The Jigawa State Government confirms that eighteen individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries on Sunday, August 10, when a commercial vehicle lost control and rammed into a crowd gathered in Yakasawa village, near Ringim town.

The crowd had assembled to welcome Governor Umar Namadi for the 15th edition of the “Citizens and Government Engagement Programme,” an initiative aimed at fostering direct dialogue between the government and its citizens.

According to eyewitness accounts, the vehicle—a Golf Volkswagen with registration number FKJ 102 JB—was reportedly speeding when the driver attempted to avoid a pothole, veered off the road, and ploughed into the roadside gathering.

Emergency responders from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) swiftly evacuated the injured to Ringim General Hospital. No fatalities were reported, and all victims are currently receiving medical attention.

ASC Badruddeen Tijjani, Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC in Jigawa, stated: “Preliminary investigations indicate the driver lost control while trying to avoid a pothole. The command is committed to conducting a thorough investigation to prevent future occurrences.”

The NSCDC has urged motorists to exercise caution, especially in areas with poor road conditions, and commended the prompt response of emergency personnel.
