A closed-door executive session of the Nigerian Senate on Wednesday evening erupted into a dramatic confrontation between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, nearly escalating into a physical altercation.

The session, convened to deliberate on the timing of the Senate’s annual two-month recess, quickly devolved into chaos following sharp disagreements among the chamber’s leadership. Senator Ali Ndume reportedly criticized the lack of prior coordination, urging better communication and unity within the Senate hierarchy.

Senator Bamidele, visibly frustrated, voiced concerns over what he described as an autocratic leadership style by Senate President Akpabio. “I am frustrated as Senate Leader working under Senate President Akpabio,” Bamidele reportedly declared. “He does not call leadership meetings, he doesn’t consult with anyone. I am contemplating resigning as Senate Leader.”

In response, Akpabio fired back, asserting his authority and experience. “Senator Opeyemi should sit down! He cannot speak while I am speaking. I am in charge here,” he reportedly said, citing his extensive political background.

As tensions rose, both lawmakers appeared poised for a physical confrontation before fellow senators intervened to restore order. No official statement has been released by the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs as of the time of this release.
