Renowned journalist and broadcaster, Dr. Reuben Abati, has firmly denied allegations suggesting he sought financial favors from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. The clarification follows comments made by political commentator Lere Olayinka, which Abati has described as both misleading and malicious.
In a statement released today, Dr. Abati emphasized that he has never approached Minister Wike—directly or through intermediaries—with any request for money or personal gain. He further stated that he welcomes the opportunity to engage in direct and transparent dialogue with the Minister himself, rather than responding to commentary from third parties.
“Let me be clear: I did not—and would not—ask Minister Wike for money or any form of personal favor,” Dr. Abati said. “Any suggestion to the contrary is a fabrication. If there is a matter to discuss, I await a conversation with Wike himself, not with his proxy.”
Dr. Abati, a former presidential spokesperson and current public affairs analyst, underscored the importance of accountability in public discourse and cautioned against the spread of unfounded allegations designed to distract from substantive national issues.
He further challenged individuals propagating the claims to present evidence or desist from making defamatory statements that undermine the ethics of journalism and informed commentary.
“Public dialogue must be grounded in truth and mutual respect. Attempting to discredit others through innuendo or political theatre does a disservice to the public,” he added.
This development has sparked renewed conversations about the conduct of political actors and media representatives in Nigeria’s public arena, particularly the responsibility that comes with influence and access to information.
