The TakeItBack Movement has raised serious concerns over what it describes as an imminent attempt by the Nigerian government to shut down telecommunications networks across the country in a bid to disrupt the upcoming nationwide protest scheduled for April 7, 2025.
In a statement issued earlier today, the TakeItBack Movement accused the government of deliberately planning a coordinated shutdown of mobile networks, internet services, and social media platforms to hinder the movement’s ability to mobilize and communicate during the mass demonstration. The protest is organized to demand justice, transparency, and accountability from the Nigerian government, with the movement condemning ongoing corruption and the government's failure to address key issues affecting the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
"The TakeItBack Movement is deeply concerned that the Nigerian government, faced with mounting pressure from the people, will resort to the extreme measure of blocking communication channels in a desperate attempt to stifle free speech and prevent Nigerians from exercising their democratic right to protest," said a spokesperson for the movement.
The movement also stated that such an action would be a clear violation of citizens' rights and an attempt to silence dissent. The group is urging the international community and human rights organizations to closely monitor the situation and hold the Nigerian government accountable for any unlawful actions that may impede citizens' fundamental freedoms.
TakeItBack has emphasized its commitment to ensuring that the protest remains peaceful and nonviolent. "We are simply asking for justice and fairness in our society. The protest on April 7 is a call to action for Nigerians to stand together in the face of government oppression," the spokesperson continued.
