Amnesty International has strongly condemned the detention of a teenager by the Borno State Government following a social media post that criticized the state governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum. The organization has called for the immediate release of the young individual and for an end to the harassment of critics exercising their right to free speech.
The teenager, whose identity remains confidential, was detained by security agencies after a post on social media expressing discontent with the governor’s policies went viral. Amnesty International asserts that the arrest is a gross violation of the teenager’s rights to freedom of expression and highlights the increasing crackdown on individuals who challenge the government's narrative.
"This detention is a clear attempt to silence critics and instill fear among those who dare to voice their opinions on public matters,” said Osai Ojigho, Director of Amnesty International Nigeria. “The right to freedom of expression is a fundamental human right guaranteed under both Nigerian law and international treaties. The Borno State government must immediately release this teenager and ensure that such repressive actions are not repeated."
Amnesty International further expressed concern about the broader implications for freedom of speech in the region, where many citizens have expressed frustration with various government policies, including those related to security and economic development. The organization warns that such actions undermine democracy and the ability of citizens to engage in open discourse.
"We are deeply concerned that the Borno State Government is sending a dangerous message—that dissent will not be tolerated. It is vital that authorities uphold the rights of their citizens to speak out, especially on issues that affect their lives," said Ojigho.
