Activist and presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has strongly condemned the Nigerian police for using force to suppress peaceful protesters calling for better welfare for the nation’s officers. The protesters, largely consisting of police officers and their families, have been demanding fair wages and improved working conditions in a force widely considered among the worst-paid in the world.
In a statement released today, Sowore expressed his outrage over the police's violent response to the demonstrators, emphasizing the irony of the situation. "It is appalling that the very institution that is supposed to protect citizens is now attacking those who protect the nation’s security. The Nigerian police are not only being treated unfairly but are also the worst-paid force globally, and yet their cry for better conditions is met with force," Sowore stated.
Sowore highlighted that the Nigerian police force, which has long been plagued by insufficient resources and poor remuneration, has continued to carry out their duties despite the hardship they face daily. "These officers risk their lives every day to protect us, yet the government has failed to provide them with basic support. They are not just underpaid; they are ignored, and their well-being is disregarded," Sowore said.
The protests, which began last week in several states, have called attention to the low salaries, inadequate healthcare, and lack of training and equipment available to the police. According to recent reports, the average salary for a police officer in Nigeria is far below the global standard for similar roles, and many are forced to work under dangerous and stressful conditions with little to no support.
Sowore further criticized the government for its continued neglect of the security forces, noting that while public servants, including police officers, continue to suffer, politicians and government officials enjoy exorbitant salaries. "It is a national shame that the very people tasked with maintaining law and order are treated with such disrespect," he added.
The activist is calling on the Nigerian government to urgently address the welfare concerns of the police, ensuring they receive a living wage, access to healthcare, and better working conditions. He also called for an independent investigation into the recent use of force against peaceful protesters.
"This government must listen to the cries of its people, including those who serve in the police force. If we do not protect those who protect us, we risk undermining the very fabric of our society," Sowore concluded.
