Sources close to the Nigerian security apparatus have confirmed that security agents are planning coordinated early morning raids targeting Shiite communities and supporters of the detained Shiite leader, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, in Abuja. The operations, which are set to take place in the coming days, have been designed to crack down on individuals believed to be part of El-Zakzaky’s movement, widely known for their calls for the release of the cleric and protests over his prolonged detention.

The raids, which are said to be based on intelligence reports, aim to apprehend key figures within Shiite activist circles, including those who have shown support for El-Zakzaky, as well as to dismantle what authorities term "illegal" gatherings and activities associated with the group. Sources have revealed that the raids are expected to be highly coordinated, with security forces moving simultaneously on multiple fronts to ensure that the operations are swift and effective.

The planned crackdown has sparked concern among human rights organizations and local observers who fear that it may lead to further violence and restrictions on the freedom of expression, especially considering the high tensions between the Shiite minority and the Nigerian government. Critics argue that the authorities have been increasingly aggressive in their treatment of Shiite communities, particularly since the 2015 military crackdown that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Shiite members during clashes in Zaria.

A number of local activists have voiced fears over the potential for civilian casualties and the escalation of the ongoing tension between the Shiite minority and the government. "The government’s decision to launch another series of raids against members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) could further deepen the mistrust between the authorities and the Shiite community. We call on the government to find peaceful solutions to these ongoing issues," said one unnamed activist.

In response to the growing unrest, the Nigerian government has insisted that the operations are necessary to maintain national security and public order, as well as to curtail the perceived threat posed by those advocating for El-Zakzaky’s release. The government has yet to officially confirm the dates for the raids or provide further details regarding the scope of the operation.
