The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) made history on April 12, 2025, by destroying approximately 1.6 million kilograms of illicit drugs seized across Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo states. This monumental destruction marks the largest volume of seizures to be set ablaze at once in the agency's history.
The destroyed substances included 1.4 million kilograms of cannabis, 148,000 kilograms of codeine syrup, 123 kilograms of cocaine, 46.8 kilograms of heroin, 3,244.26 kilograms of tramadol, 1,544 kilograms of skuchies, and 111 kilograms of methamphetamine, among others.
NDLEA Chairman, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa, emphasized the agency's commitment to tackling drug trafficking, warning that there will be no safe haven for those involved in the illicit trade. He thanked governors of Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo states for their support and acknowledged the collaboration with international partners. The agency has successfully prosecuted and convicted 10,572 offenders in the past four years.
The NDLEA boss also appreciated the support of international partners, including the US Drug Enforcement Administration, UK Border Force, French Police, and German Police, among others. He commended the dedication of NDLEA officers and thanked stakeholders, including the Nigerian Military, Customs, Police, and other agencies, for their contributions to the agency's success.
Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, commended the NDLEA's efforts, highlighting the need for investment in prevention, education, counseling, and youth empowerment initiatives to combat the drug scourge. He emphasized that the drug menace is a social, economic, and public health crisis, and that strengthening rehabilitation centers and providing support systems for those battling addiction is crucial.
