A recent protest at a Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) branch in Lagos has led to the arrest of a customer and activists demanding answers over the alleged disappearance of N2.1 million from the customer's account.
The customer, identified as Ariyo Ahmed Adewale, visited the Kosofe branch of GTBank after discovering unauthorized transactions on his account, allegedly made via the online shopping platform Jumia—a platform he insists he has never used. Frustrated by the bank’s response, Ariyo staged a protest inside the branch, demanding a detailed account statement and an explanation for the missing funds. However, his demonstration was met with resistance, and the bank reportedly called the police, leading to his arrest.
According to reports, Ariyo had initially noticed N2 million missing from his account and immediately contacted GTBank customer care to block further transactions. Unfortunately, before action could be taken, the unauthorized transactions had increased.
Activists supporting Ariyo argue that the bank’s inability to trace or explain the missing funds raises concerns about security lapses and customer protection. They are calling for a full investigation into the matter and a refund of the lost funds.
