In a landmark ruling, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, husband of the late renowned gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, to death by hanging. Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme delivered the judgment, marking the conclusion of a high-profile case that has gripped the nation.
Peter Nwachukwu was found guilty of culpable homicide in connection with the tragic death of his wife, Osinachi, on April 8, 2022. The court determined that the prosecution had successfully proven its case beyond reasonable doubt, leading to the conviction. The charges against Nwachukwu included spousal battery, criminal intimidation, cruelty to children, and other offenses.
The trial, which commenced on June 3, 2022, saw the prosecution present compelling evidence, including testimonies from 17 witnesses and 25 documentary exhibits. Among the witnesses were two of the deceased’s children, whose accounts provided critical insights into the case. The defense, led by counsel Reginald Nwali, presented its arguments and called additional witnesses, but the court ultimately ruled in favor of the prosecution.
Justice Nwosu-Iheme emphasized the gravity of the offenses and the need to uphold the law. In addition to the death sentence for culpable homicide, Nwachukwu received various prison terms and fines for other charges, reflecting the court’s commitment to justice.
