In a rapidly developing situation near the White House, the U.S. Secret Service responded to a potential threat today, shooting an armed man who approached the perimeter of the secured area. The incident occurred shortly before 2:00 PM when the individual, who has yet to be identified, was observed displaying a weapon near Lafayette Park, a public space located just north of the White House complex.
According to initial reports, the suspect refused to comply with verbal commands from Secret Service officers to stop. In an effort to neutralize the immediate threat, officers discharged their firearms, striking the individual. Emergency medical teams quickly arrived on the scene and transported the man to a nearby hospital. His current condition remains unclear.
"The U.S. Secret Service is committed to ensuring the safety and security of the White House, its occupants, and all personnel in the vicinity. This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the critical and often dangerous work undertaken by law enforcement officers every day," said Secret Service Director Kimberly J. Fennell.
The Secret Service, along with other law enforcement agencies, is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Authorities have not yet released any information about the suspect’s identity, and it is unclear whether the man had any connection to a larger threat or if this was an isolated incident.
