The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has issued a stern warning to the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, demanding the immediate reversal of the suspension imposed on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. SERAP has made it clear that failure to lift the suspension within seven days will result in legal action.
In a statement released today, SERAP stated that the suspension of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is a violation of her rights to free speech and parliamentary privileges. The group emphasized that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees the right to freedom of expression, which must be protected for all citizens, including elected representatives.
According to SERAP, the suspension of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was politically motivated and contrary to the principles of democracy, fairness, and accountability. The group further warned that this action sets a dangerous precedent, undermining the integrity of the Nigerian Senate and the democratic values it is supposed to uphold.
SERAP’s Executive Director, Mr. Adetokunbo Mumuni, stated: "We call on Senate President Akpabio to act in accordance with the Constitution and immediately reverse the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. We believe that this action is part of a broader pattern of silencing dissent and stifling opposition voices. If the suspension is not reversed within seven days, SERAP will take all necessary legal actions to protect the rights of the senator and uphold the rule of law."
