The Football Association (FA) of England has today announced a new policy that will restrict the participation of transgender women in sanctioned women’s football competitions. The FA states that the decision is aimed at ensuring "competitive fairness and safety" in the women’s game.

Under the updated policy, transgender women will no longer be eligible to compete in female-only leagues and competitions governed by the FA. Instead, the FA says it will promote "inclusive opportunities" through mixed or open-category formats.

"This has been a complex and sensitive issue, and we have consulted with a range of stakeholders including players, medical experts, and members of the LGBTQ+ community," the FA said in an official statement. "While we support the inclusion of all individuals in football, we also have a responsibility to ensure fairness and safety in the women’s game."

The FA’s decision aligns with a broader trend across international sport, as governing bodies reconsider transgender eligibility criteria in the context of physical advantages, fairness, and athlete welfare.

The move has drawn mixed responses. Supporters argue that it protects the integrity of female competition, while critics say it marginalizes transgender athletes and undermines principles of inclusion and equality.
