Omoyele Sowore, activist and presidential candidate, has condemned the decision of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) to confer an honorary award on Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu. Sowore, who has consistently been vocal about issues of governance and accountability, described the planned honour as "fraudulent" and "undeserved."
In a statement released today, Sowore expressed his concerns over the university's decision to bestow the award upon Seyi Tinubu, questioning the basis for such an honour. According to Sowore, the award represents a clear example of the politicization of institutions and the disregard for merit in Nigeria’s public sphere.
“This is a fraudulent and undeserving award that speaks volumes about the rot in our institutions,” Sowore said. “Rather than recognising individuals based on their contributions to society or academic excellence, Nnamdi Azikiwe University is choosing to play into political patronage. It’s a sad day for our higher education system when merit is replaced by political connections.”
Sowore also criticized the decision as a form of nepotism that undermines the credibility of academic institutions and perpetuates the cycle of privilege. He highlighted the controversy surrounding the Tinubu family and suggested that the decision was politically motivated rather than driven by any significant accomplishments on the part of Seyi Tinubu.
“This is nothing but an attempt to reward political loyalty with an academic title,” Sowore continued. “Seyi Tinubu has not demonstrated any exceptional achievements that merit this kind of recognition. It is an insult to the hardworking students, academics, and professionals in Nigeria who have earned their titles through actual contributions to society.”
Sowore, who ran for president in the 2019 and 2023 elections, has been a staunch critic of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He has often spoken out against what he describes as systemic corruption and the abuse of power by the political elite.
The award to Seyi Tinubu is scheduled to take place during the university's forthcoming convocation ceremony. Sowore’s comments have sparked a wider debate on social media and within political circles, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the growing trend of political awards and honours being used to further entrench dynastic power in the country.
