In a landmark decision today, the Supreme Court of Nigeria dismissed the appeal filed by Nyesom Wike’s successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, against the leadership of the Rivers State House of Assembly led by Speaker Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani Amaewhule.

The court's ruling effectively upholds the legitimacy of the Amaewhule-led Assembly, which has been embroiled in a legal battle with Fubara’s faction over control of the Assembly’s leadership and the process of governance in the state. The judgment marked a significant turning point in the ongoing political drama, which had put the state’s legislative process at risk.

Fubara had sought to challenge the authority of Amaewhule, claiming the Speaker’s election lacked proper procedure. However, the Supreme Court, in its verdict, found the appeal to be without merit and dismissed it, affirming the constitutional validity of Amaewhule's leadership.

In a statement following the ruling, Amaewhule expressed gratitude to the judiciary for its impartiality, stating, “This judgment strengthens democracy in Rivers State and the rule of law. We remain committed to the progress of the state and the welfare of its people.”
