A coalition of Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWDs) in Nigeria has formally petitioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressing grave concerns over the persistent hardship, exclusion, and lack of access to basic amenities that have continued to hinder their quality of life in the country. The group, which represents millions of Nigerians living with various disabilities, decried the unfulfilled promises and hollow words from the government, emphasizing that the situation has worsened instead of improving.
In the petition, the PLWDs group highlighted the systemic neglect they face in terms of accessible infrastructure, healthcare, education, employment opportunities, and social inclusion. Despite repeated assurances from past administrations and the current government, persons with disabilities continue to face barriers that prevent them from fully participating in society.
"Over the years, the promises made by previous administrations to enhance the lives of PLWDs have been left unfulfilled. Instead of receiving the support and infrastructure necessary to live a dignified life, we are met with more hardship, increased vulnerability, and continued neglect. These hollow words and empty promises have only served to exacerbate the situation."
"We are tired of hearing words that are not backed by action," said one of the group’s representatives. "We need concrete steps to ensure that we are not merely surviving, but thriving as equal citizens of this nation."
