A coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) has expressed grave concern over the recent extension of the tenure of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Olukayode Egbetokun, citing a range of issues including nepotism, lack of accountability, and the potential erosion of public trust in the Nigerian Police Force (NPF).
In a joint statement released today, the CSOs argued that the extension of IGP Egbetokun’s tenure undermines efforts to reform and professionalize the police force, which has long been marred by corruption, inefficiency, and human rights abuses.
“We are deeply alarmed by the decision to extend the tenure of IGP Egbetokun, particularly given concerns around his leadership style and the ongoing nepotism within the force,” said Chima Okereke, spokesperson for the group. “This move appears to perpetuate a system where senior positions are determined not by merit or competence but by personal connections and favoritism, which can only further damage the integrity of the Nigerian Police Force.”
The CSOs highlighted that the extension could signal a troubling disregard for merit-based appointments, a principle that is critical to ensuring effective policing and justice in Nigeria. They also raised concerns about the concentration of power within the police leadership, which could lead to further abuses and a lack of accountability for officers involved in corrupt or criminal activities.
Additionally, the group noted the potential impact on public trust, stressing that transparency and fairness in leadership appointments are essential for building confidence in law enforcement institutions. Without these values, they argue, it is difficult for citizens to have faith in the ability of the police to protect and serve the public effectively.
"We call on the Nigerian government to reconsider this extension and to prioritize the appointment of law enforcement leaders who are truly committed to the principles of justice, fairness, and professionalism," the statement continued. “The country deserves a police force that operates without bias and with full accountability to the people it serves."
