The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) today arraigned Theodore Orji, the former governor of Abia State, alongside four other individuals on charges of financial fraud involving an alleged sum of N60.85 billion.

The charges, which include conspiracy, money laundering, and criminal breach of trust, were filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja. The EFCC claims that the accused, during Theodore Orji’s tenure as governor from 2007 to 2015, allegedly misappropriated the substantial amount in state funds, diverting them to personal accounts and other illicit ventures.

In addition to Orji, the individuals facing charges include key associates and former officials from the Abia State government. The prosecution, led by the EFCC, presented compelling evidence that allegedly links the accused to systematic fraudulent activities, designed to siphon public funds intended for the welfare of the people of Abia State.

The EFCC has vowed to pursue the case with the utmost seriousness, emphasizing its commitment to tackling corruption at all levels of government. The Commission also reiterated its resolve to ensure that public officials found guilty of misappropriating state resources face the full extent of the law.

The arraignment of Orji and his co-defendants is part of the EFCC's broader strategy to bring accountability to Nigerian politics and governance. Following the proceedings, the court adjourned the case for further hearing and ordered the accused to be remanded in EFCC custody.

EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to fighting corruption and promoting transparency within the Nigerian government.

“The EFCC will continue to hold public officials accountable, no matter their status or political affiliation,” Uwujaren stated. “This case serves as a strong reminder that corruption will not be tolerated, and those involved will face the full wrath of the law.”
