Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has called on President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian Senate to urgently launch a thorough investigation into the serious sexual harassment allegations leveled against the former Governor of Akwa Ibom State and current Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio.
Atiku, in a statement issued today, expressed his deep concern over the gravity of the allegations and the potential implications for the integrity of the Nigerian government. He emphasized the importance of a transparent and impartial inquiry to uphold the dignity of the Nigerian people and ensure that justice is served.
“The seriousness of the sexual harassment accusations against Mr. Akpabio cannot be underestimated,” Atiku stated. “These claims must not be ignored, as they have the potential to undermine the trust of Nigerians in our institutions. I call on President Bola Tinubu to ensure that the Senate takes swift action and conducts a thorough probe into these allegations.”
Atiku further stressed that public officials, especially those holding significant positions in government, must be held to the highest standards of conduct. He pointed out that an investigation into Akpabio’s actions is essential not only for the sake of justice but also to maintain the credibility of the administration.
The call comes as Akpabio faces growing pressure following reports of inappropriate behavior that have sparked widespread public concern. Details of the alleged harassment remain under investigation, and Atiku urged all involved parties to allow the legal process to unfold in accordance with the rule of law.
