The Federal Republic of Nigeria is pleased to announce that it has secured the endorsement of seven countries in its bid to establish a UNESCO Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Institute. This significant development underscores the international community's recognition of Nigeria's commitment to advancing media literacy and combating misinformation globally.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a press briefing today. He expressed gratitude for the support from the endorsing countries, which include key partners in promoting media literacy initiatives worldwide. Additionally, commitments have been received from twenty other nations, reflecting a growing consensus on the importance of enhancing media literacy to foster informed and resilient societies.

Minister Idris stated, “The establishment of this UNESCO MIL Institute in Nigeria is not just a national priority; it is a global imperative. In an age where misinformation and disinformation threaten the very fabric of our societies, this institute will serve as a beacon of hope and a center for excellence in media education.”

The proposed institute will be located in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory and aims to provide training programs that equip individuals with essential skills to navigate the complexities of digital communication. It will also focus on fostering critical thinking, platform transparency, and safeguarding freedom of expression, aligning with UNESCO’s global priorities.

During discussions with UNESCO officials, including Dr. Tawfik Jelassi, Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, Minister Idris highlighted Nigeria's previous hosting of the Global Media and Information Literacy Week in 2022 as a pivotal moment that catalyzed this initiative. The event showcased Nigeria's leadership in advocating for media literacy on an international stage.
