A catastrophic fuel tanker explosion occurred this morning at Dikko Junction along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway, resulting in numerous fatalities and injuries. Reports indicate that scores of individuals, including a pregnant woman, are feared dead after the explosion, which took place around 10 AM local time.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the incident unfolded when a petrol tanker overturned and began leaking fuel. A crowd quickly gathered to scoop the spilled fuel, a common practice in the region. Tragically, as people were collecting the fuel, the tanker exploded, engulfing many in flames and causing widespread panic.

Initial estimates suggest that at least 48 individuals have been confirmed dead, with numbers expected to rise as rescue operations continue and more victims are identified. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) is actively engaged in recovery efforts at the scene.

Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago expressed profound sorrow over the incident. In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the governor described the explosion as "worrisome, heartbreaking, and unfortunate." He extended his condolences to the families of the victims and called for heightened safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Governor Bago urged residents to prioritize their safety and avoid risky behaviors such as gathering around accident sites. He has instructed relevant authorities to enhance road safety protocols and ensure that security measures are in place during ongoing rescue operations.
