In a statement today, Hon. Abubakar Kalu, a prominent member of the Nigerian House of Representatives, expressed that the legislative body is open to discussions on the potential abolition of the death penalty in the country.

Kalu, speaking to reporters, emphasized the importance of revisiting Nigeria’s criminal justice system and considering the moral, legal, and humanitarian implications of capital punishment. He noted that the evolving global stance on human rights and justice requires lawmakers to assess whether the death penalty aligns with modern principles of fairness and dignity.

“We must engage in a constructive dialogue about the death penalty, taking into account both the legal frameworks and the societal impact,” Kalu remarked. “It is crucial that we carefully examine the effectiveness of capital punishment in deterring crime and its compatibility with human rights standards.”

Kalu acknowledged the complex nature of the issue, which involves balancing public safety with individual rights, while also recognizing the evolving perspectives on the topic globally. He underscored that any potential decision would be made after thorough consultations with legal experts, human rights advocates, and Nigerian citizens.

The lawmaker also highlighted the increasing global trend towards abolishing the death penalty, with many nations rethinking its application. He encouraged Nigerians to participate in the national conversation, contributing to a fair and inclusive debate on this critical matter.
