The Federal Republic of Nigeria mourns the passing of its former President, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who died today, July 13, 2025, in a London clinic following a prolonged illness

President Buhari served Nigeria with distinction across two pivotal eras: first as military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, and later as democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023. His leadership was marked by a firm stance against corruption, a commitment to national security, and efforts to modernize Nigeria’s infrastructure and economy.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the loss and has dispatched Vice President Kashim Shettima to accompany the late president’s remains back to Nigeria. National flags will be flown at half-staff in honor of the departed leader.

The Buhari family, in a statement shared by spokesperson Garba Shehu, announced: “The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”

Funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course, in accordance with Islamic rites.

The nation extends its condolences to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians who held the former president in high regard. His legacy as a disciplined leader and patriot will remain etched in Nigeria’s history.
