A group of Ogoni youths has called for more inclusive representation and a broader platform to express their concerns during a recent closed-door meeting with National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, in Abuja. The meeting, which took place under tight security, sought to address critical issues facing the Ogoni community, including socio-economic development, security, and political inclusion.

The Ogoni Youths, representing various groups across the Niger Delta, expressed disappointment over the limited representation at the meeting, which they claim failed to encompass the full diversity of voices from their community. In a statement issued following the meeting, the youth leaders emphasized the importance of involving more stakeholders in future discussions, particularly those from grassroots organizations and local leaders who directly interact with the people.

“We appreciate the NSA's attention to the challenges facing our community, but we believe the meeting could have been more effective with broader representation,” said the spokesperson for the Ogoni Youths. “The concerns of young people, local activists, and other marginalized groups must be given equal weight in the dialogue. For true peace and development to occur, we need a more inclusive approach that reflects the interests of all Ogoni people.”

The youth leaders also highlighted the pressing issues that remain unresolved, including environmental degradation, the need for greater investment in education and healthcare, and the urgent requirement for infrastructural development in the region. They further reiterated their commitment to working collaboratively with the federal government to address these issues but emphasized that such collaboration must be built on transparency and inclusiveness.

The Ogoni Youths have called for follow-up meetings that will involve a wider array of representatives from all segments of Ogoni society, with an emphasis on youth, women, and grassroots leaders. They have also requested that the NSA prioritize regular consultations with community leaders to ensure that their voices are consistently heard in the formulation of policies and programs aimed at addressing the challenges faced by the Ogoni people.
