The Nigerian Navy has successfully apprehended eight suspected stowaways who were attempting to illegally migrate to Europe. The arrests occurred on January 21, 2025, aboard the tanker ship CHARMINAR PANAMA while it was preparing to depart from the Apapa port in Lagos.

In a coordinated operation led by the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Beecroft, naval personnel conducted thorough inspections of vessels in the area, which resulted in the discovery of the stowaways concealed within the ship. This operation underscores the Navy's ongoing commitment to combat human trafficking and illegal migration activities along Nigeria's coastal waters.

The suspected stowaways were found hiding in a compartment of the vessel, with intentions to travel to Europe in search of better opportunities. Following their arrest, they were taken into custody for further investigation and processing.

Commander of NNS Beecroft, Captain Adebayo Adedayo, emphasized the importance of vigilance and proactive measures in ensuring maritime security and safety. He stated, “The Nigerian Navy remains resolute in its mission to prevent illegal activities at sea, including stowaway incidents that pose significant risks to both individuals and maritime operations.”
