The Nigerian community in the United Kingdom is mourning the untimely death of Mrs. Olubunmi Okeniyi, a 32 year old mother who tragically passed away during childbirth on January 25, 2025. This heartbreaking incident occurred just weeks after she celebrated her graduation with a Master’s degree from a UK university.

Mrs. Okeniyi relocated to the UK with her two children to join her husband, Jacob Okeniyi, in September 2024. Her journey was marked by hope and ambition as she pursued higher education to create a better future for her family. However, the joy of her academic achievement turned to sorrow as she faced complications during childbirth.

The Nigerian community has expressed profound grief over this loss, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding maternal health and safety for women of African descent in the UK. Community leaders are calling for increased awareness and support systems to address these critical issues, especially for new immigrants navigating healthcare systems in foreign countries.

In a statement released by the Nigerians in the UK association, they noted, “Mrs. Okeniyi’s passing is not just a personal tragedy; it reflects broader systemic issues that need urgent attention. We must ensure that no woman faces such risks during one of life’s most vulnerable moments.”
