Civil rights activist and former senator, Shehu Sani, has made a poignant appeal for the recognition and appreciation of Nigeria's freedom fighters during a recent visit to the tombs of six deposed Emirs in Lokoja. These Emirs are celebrated for their steadfast resistance against colonial rule and their unwavering commitment to the sovereignty of Nigeria.
In his address to the press, Sani emphasized the importance of honoring those who fought tirelessly for Nigeria's independence and freedom. He stated, "It is imperative that we acknowledge the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters. Their bravery and resilience laid the foundation for our nation’s independence and shaped our identity as Nigerians."
Sani's call comes at a time when many Nigerians are reflecting on the nation's history and the contributions of various activists and leaders who played pivotal roles in the struggle against colonialism. He highlighted that recognizing these figures is not only a tribute to their legacy but also a vital step in fostering national unity and pride.
The former senator pointed out that many of these freedom fighters have been overlooked in contemporary discussions about Nigeria’s history. He urged the government at all levels to incorporate their stories into educational curricula and public commemorations, ensuring that future generations understand the significance of their contributions.
