The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially set 16 years as the minimum age for admission into all tertiary institutions across the country. This policy decision, announced today by the Federal Ministry of Education, is part of an ongoing effort to promote academic maturity, enhance student welfare, and standardize entry requirements nationwide.

Speaking on the new directive, the Honourable Minister of Education stated: “We believe 16 is a more appropriate age for admission into our universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. This policy supports our goal of fostering a more balanced and capable student population."

The new age requirement will take effect from the 2026/2027 academic session. All admissions conducted prior to this period will follow existing procedures, but institutions are advised to begin sensitization efforts immediately.

Response from Institutions and Stakeholders: Many universities and tertiary institutions have expressed support for the policy, highlighting its potential to reduce dropout rates and improve classroom engagement. Educational NGOs and parent groups are also weighing in, with some calling for transitional guidelines to assist affected students.

The Federal Ministry of Education will collaborate with state governments, examination bodies, and school administrators to ensure smooth enforcement and awareness.
