The Australian Government has issued an urgent travel advisory, warning all citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Nigeria due to escalating violence and heightened terrorism risks across the country. The advisory, updated today by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), reflects growing concerns over security in multiple regions of Nigeria, particularly in the north and southeast.

The Australian Government’s warning is based on recent reports of increasing attacks by terrorist groups, including Boko Haram, ISWAP (Islamic State West Africa Province), and other armed militant factions. These groups have been responsible for a wave of violent incidents, including bombings, kidnappings, and assaults on both civilians and military personnel. In addition, the Nigerian government has struggled to contain widespread violence from ethnic and political unrest, further exacerbating the danger to foreign nationals.

The Australian Government has emphasized that all Australians currently in Nigeria should reconsider their plans to remain in the country and take immediate steps to secure their safety. Australians are advised to register with the DFAT's "Smart Traveller" service, monitor local news, and follow instructions from local authorities.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Penny Wong, urged Australian citizens to exercise extreme caution if they must travel to Nigeria, stressing the importance of avoiding high-risk areas. "The security situation in Nigeria is rapidly deteriorating, and we strongly advise Australians to reconsider any plans for travel to this region. The safety and well-being of our citizens abroad is our top priority."

The advisory also recommends that Australians stay informed about local conditions and be prepared for sudden changes to security levels. In cases of emergency, Australians in Nigeria are encouraged to contact the Australian High Commission in Abuja for consular assistance.
