In a solemn moment for the nation, Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in London to accompany the remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari back to Nigeria for burial. Acting on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Shettima leads a high-level delegation that includes Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila and other senior officials.
Former President Buhari passed away on Sunday, July 13, at approximately 4:30 p.m. in London following a prolonged illness. He was 82 years old. His passing marks the end of an era for Nigeria, as Buhari served both as a military head of state (1984–1985) and as a democratically elected president (2015–2023), leaving behind a legacy of discipline, integrity, and national service.
President Tinubu has ordered national flags to be flown at half-mast for seven days in honor of the late leader. The remains of President Buhari are scheduled to arrive in Nigeria early Monday and will be transported directly to his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
Speaking from London, Vice President Shettima stated, “This is a moment of deep national reflection. President Buhari was a patriot whose life was defined by service to Nigeria. We are here to ensure he returns home with the dignity and respect he deserves.”
Dignitaries from across Nigeria and West Africa are expected to attend the burial, with tributes pouring in from past presidents, governors, lawmakers, and citizens alike. President Tinubu described Buhari as “a soldier, a statesman, and a patriot who placed the country above personal interest at every turn.”
