A Nigerian court has issued a landmark ruling, ordering the Nigerian Police Force to either arraign detained activist Olamide Thomas within 48 hours or release her unconditionally. The court’s decision follows growing concerns over the prolonged detention of Thomas, a prominent civil rights advocate, who has been held without formal charges.

Olamide Thomas, a vocal activist known for her work in advocating for human rights, social justice, and the rights of marginalized groups, was arrested by security agents earlier this month under controversial circumstances. Since her arrest, her detention has sparked widespread protests, calls for accountability, and an outpouring of support from local and international human rights organizations.

In today’s ruling, the court emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and protecting fundamental rights, particularly the right to liberty and a fair trial. The court’s directive, issued by Justice Adebayo Olorunfemi, stated that the police must either present credible charges against Thomas within 48 hours or immediately release her from detention.

“This ruling is a significant victory for justice and a reminder of the importance of holding law enforcement accountable,” said human rights lawyer, Fola Alabi. “The unlawful detention of Olamide Thomas without charge is an infringement on her constitutional rights. This ruling serves as a critical step toward securing her release and ensuring that all Nigerians are treated equally before the law.”

Activist groups and civil society organizations, including the Nigerian Human Rights Commission, have lauded the court’s intervention, calling it a victory for free expression and human rights. Many have stressed the need for the Nigerian authorities to respect due process and avoid using detention as a tool for silencing dissent.
