In a significant move to bolster food security in Nasarawa State, Governor Abdullahi Sule has officially distributed 30 new tractors to various farmer groups across the state's 13 local government areas. This initiative aims to empower local farmers, improve agricultural productivity, and ultimately combat food scarcity in the region.
The distribution of these tractors is part of the state government's broader agricultural production program, which aligns with the national food security initiative spearheaded by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Governor Sule emphasized that this initiative is designed not only to enhance farming efficiency but also to provide local farmers with essential resources and support.
“Today marks a historic moment for our farmers,” Governor Sule stated during the distribution event. “These tractors will significantly reduce the burden of manual labor and increase our farmers' capacity to cultivate larger areas of land more effectively. Our goal is to ensure that Nasarawa State becomes a leading agricultural hub in Nigeria.”
The tractors will be allocated to organized farmer groups, enabling them to utilize modern farming techniques that can lead to higher yields. This strategic intervention is expected to address the challenges of food production in the state, which has been grappling with issues of food insecurity and poverty.
In addition to tractor distribution, the state government plans to implement an outgrower scheme, providing farmers with fertilizers, chemicals, and seedlings. This program aims to ensure that local farmers have access to necessary inputs while guaranteeing them a market for their produce.
Mr. Peter Ahemba, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Affairs, highlighted that this initiative is part of ongoing efforts by the Nasarawa State Government to enhance agricultural practices and improve food security. “This is not just about distributing tractors; it’s about transforming our agricultural landscape and ensuring that our farmers thrive,” Ahemba remarked.
Local farmers have expressed gratitude for this initiative, noting its potential impact on their livelihoods. Usman Faruk, a farmer from Lafia Local Government Area, stated, “This intervention will liberate us from hunger and poverty levels. We are eternally grateful for this support.”
