Nigerian military forces have successfully freed several kidnapped victims, apprehended 12 suspected bandits, and seized a large quantity of illicit drugs during an intense gun battle in Taraba State, northern Nigeria.

The operation, conducted by troops of the Nigerian Army in collaboration with local security agencies, took place in the early hours of November 11, 2024, after credible intelligence led to the location of a notorious bandit camp. As the security forces closed in on the camp, a fierce exchange of gunfire ensued, resulting in the neutralization of several bandits and the capture of 12 individuals believed to be involved in kidnapping and other criminal activities across the region.

In addition to rescuing the victims, who were reportedly held captive for several days, the troops discovered and seized a significant stash of cannabis that had been abandoned by the bandits during their retreat. The drug haul, which is suspected to have been intended for distribution across various parts of the country, has been taken into custody by the authorities for further investigation and destruction.

"The successful operation is a testament to the professionalism and determination of our troops in the fight against banditry and criminality," said Colonel John Okon, spokesperson for the Nigerian Army. "We remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of Nigerians, particularly in the northern regions, where banditry and kidnapping have caused significant hardship for local communities."

The freed victims, whose identities have not been disclosed for safety reasons, have been handed over to medical teams for evaluation and care. Authorities are also conducting further interrogations of the detained suspects to gather intelligence on ongoing criminal networks in the area.

This operation is part of a broader, coordinated effort by the Nigerian military to combat the growing menace of banditry, kidnappings, and illegal drug trade in Taraba and other northern states. The military has vowed to intensify its efforts to dismantle criminal groups and restore peace to affected communities.
