Residents in various communities along the Ogun River, particularly in Isheri, Arepo, and Warewa, are experiencing heightened anxiety as the Ogun-Oshun River Basin Development Authority (OORBDA) prepares to release excess water from the Oyan Dam. This action, a routine measure to manage water levels during the rainy season, has raised concerns about potential flooding similar to last year's devastating incidents.
The Lagos and Ogun state governments have issued urgent warnings to residents in flood-prone areas to temporarily relocate. The anticipated release of water is expected to increase river currents significantly, leading to overflow and flooding. Last year, many residents were displaced due to a surge caused by similar dam operations, prompting officials to act swiftly this time around.
Ogun State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Ola Oresanya, emphasized that the dam is currently releasing water at a rate of 12%, which is already causing noticeable increases in river levels. He stated, “We must release this water to prevent catastrophic failures like those witnessed in Maiduguri. If we do not manage the dam properly, we risk a disaster.”
In response to the growing fears among residents, both state governments are collaborating on emergency measures. These include dredging local rivers and tributaries to facilitate better drainage and reduce flood risks. Governor Dapo Abiodun has also committed to constructing elevated roads with adequate drainage systems in affected areas.
Residents have reported seeing rising water levels encroaching into their neighborhoods. Muftau Alabi from Isheri North GRA noted that while flooding has not yet reached alarming levels, there is a palpable sense of unease as water continues to rise daily.
Local authorities are actively monitoring the situation and have mobilized resources to assist communities at risk. The OORBDA has assured residents that they are taking all necessary precautions to mitigate flooding risks. Saliu Adeniyi, Head of Public Relations at OORBDA, stated that regular maintenance and monitoring of the dam are ongoing and that they do not anticipate severe flooding downstream.
Residents are urged to heed government advisories and consider relocating temporarily if they live in low-lying areas susceptible to flooding. The Ogun State government is committed to ensuring community safety and will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves.
