The Nigerian Navy has confirmed the tragic death of one of its personnel following a boat accident during a routine anti-smuggling operation targeting illegal rice imports in Lagos waters.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, August 3, 2025, during a patrol exercise coordinated by the Western Naval Command. According to preliminary reports, a Navy patrol boat pursuing suspected smugglers capsized near the Badagry axis of Lagos State due to rough tides and possible mechanical issues.
Despite immediate rescue efforts by fellow officers and local marine support units, one naval officer was found unresponsive and later confirmed dead. Several other personnel onboard were rescued and are currently receiving medical attention.
In a statement released by Naval spokesperson Commodore A.O. Ayo-Vaughan, the Nigerian Navy expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the deceased as a "brave and dedicated officer who gave his life in service to the nation."
“The Nigerian Navy mourns the passing of our fallen hero who died while executing his duties to curb the growing threat of smuggling activities, particularly the illegal importation of foreign parboiled rice through our waterways,” the statement read.
The Navy emphasized its continued commitment to securing Nigeria’s maritime domain and combating smuggling operations that undermine national economic interests and food security policies.
An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the incident and assess the operational safety protocols in place.The name of the deceased officer is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.
