Former Governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his commitment to democratic values, stating unequivocally that he has never participated in election rigging or ballot snatching at any point in his political career.
Speaking during an interactive session with members of the Nigerian diaspora, Obi addressed allegations and insinuations regarding electoral malpractice, which he described as “baseless and politically motivated.”
“Let me make it very clear: I have never rigged or snatched any election,” Obi said. “My record in Anambra is open and verifiable. I came into office through the courts, not through thuggery or electoral violence. I believe in the sanctity of the ballot.”
Obi emphasized the importance of restoring integrity to Nigeria’s democratic process, stressing that for the country to make meaningful progress, elections must be transparent, credible, and reflect the will of the people.
He also took the opportunity to urge Nigerian leaders and institutions to uphold the rule of law and resist the temptation to manipulate the electoral system for personal or partisan gain.
“We cannot build a new Nigeria on a foundation of dishonesty,” he said. “Our democracy must be protected by truth and justice, not tainted by lies or intimidation.”
Peter Obi’s remarks come amid ongoing debates over electoral reforms and transparency in Nigeria’s democratic institutions, especially following the controversies surrounding the 2023 general elections.
