The Office of the President confirms that the South African government is currently on high alert following credible intelligence indicating a potential coup plot involving elements of the military. Authorities have launched a full-scale investigation into the matter and are coordinating a robust response to safeguard national security, democratic institutions, and civilian safety.
According to an official statement issued early Wednesday morning, intelligence agencies intercepted communications and movements suggesting clandestine coordination aimed at destabilizing the elected administration. While no further details have been released regarding individuals or groups allegedly involved, government sources say preventative measures are being activated immediately.
“South Africa’s democratic values are non-negotiable,” said Presidential Spokesperson Thandi Mokoena. “Any attempts to undermine the will of the people will be met with lawful and resolute action.”
Defense Minister Sipho Dlamini confirmed that key military installations across the country have been placed under tighter security and personnel activities are being closely monitored. Civilian operations remain unaffected, but the public is urged to report any suspicious activity to relevant authorities.
