The Kogi State Government has sealed off a hotel in Lokoja where the prime suspect in the killing of photojournalist, Ayobami, allegedly took his own life. The move comes as part of intensified investigations aimed at uncovering the circumstances surrounding both the tragic murder and the suspect’s death.

The suspect, who was reported to be a staff member of the Nigeria Correctional Service, had been linked to the fatal shooting of Ayobami, a respected photojournalist based in Lokoja. Before law enforcement could proceed with full interrogation and prosecution, the suspect was found dead in a room at the now-sealed hotel, believed to have died by suicide.

In an official statement released on Friday, the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, confirmed the government's decision to shut down the hotel, emphasizing the need to secure the location as a crime scene and preserve evidence.

“The state government is deeply concerned about the sequence of events. In line with our commitment to justice, transparency, and public safety, we have directed that the hotel be immediately sealed to allow thorough investigations by relevant security and forensic agencies,” Fanwo stated.

The government noted that it is working closely with the Kogi State Police Command, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies to ensure that all leads are followed and that any form of complicity—whether through negligence or active involvement—will be uncovered and dealt with in accordance with the law.

“This is not just about the death of a suspect,” Fanwo added. “It is about the life that was lost before, the need to get answers, and the importance of ensuring that no detail is overlooked. The safety of our journalists, the sanctity of life, and the integrity of our justice system are all on the line.”

The government further appealed to members of the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading misinformation. It assured the public that updates would be provided as investigations progress.

Meanwhile, the family of late Ayobami continues to receive condolences from colleagues, civil society groups, and press freedom advocates across the country. Calls have intensified for a full probe into the matter to ensure justice is not only done but seen to be done.
