A civic coalition comprising prominent business leaders, human rights advocates, and community stakeholders has urgently called on Governor Charles Soludo to launch an independent investigation into an alleged assault by members of the Anambra State agency, which reportedly led to the death of Chief Boniface Okonkwo, former president of the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (OCCIMA).
According to eyewitness accounts and early reports circulating on social media, Chief Okonkwo sustained critical injuries during a confrontation involving agents of a state task force allegedly targeting local businesses in Onitsha. He later succumbed to those injuries, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation from various quarters.
The group, operating under the banner Justice for Anambra Entrepreneurs, issued the following statement:
“We are deeply alarmed by the tragic and avoidable death of Chief Okonkwo—a respected entrepreneur, philanthropist, and voice for ethical business practices. The actions of the agency, if confirmed, represent a gross abuse of power and a stain on the legacy of progress that Governor Soludo has committed to building.”
“This is not just about one man,” the group emphasized. “It’s about setting a precedent that protects all citizens from institutional brutality.”
Chief Okonkwo was celebrated for his contributions to commerce in southeastern Nigeria and his mentorship of young entrepreneurs. Community vigils and commemorative events are being organized in Onitsha to honor his legacy.
The coalition has pledged to continue its advocacy until meaningful action is taken. As the state watches closely, the call for justice has become a rallying cry for reform, dignity, and accountability in Anambra’s public service.
