A coalition of international organizations, civil society groups, and diaspora networks has called on the Nigerian government to take bold legislative action by reserving parliamentary seats for citizens living abroad. This appeal—part of a broader push for inclusive democratic participation—highlights the growing political and economic influence of Nigeria’s global diaspora and their desire for formal representation within the country's decision-making processes.

The coalition, composed of advocacy groups from North America, Europe, and across Africa, issued a statement today emphasizing the importance of integrating diasporan voices into Nigeria’s legislative framework. According to the statement, this move would not only strengthen democratic engagement but also ensure that policies reflect the realities and contributions of Nigerians abroad—who remit billions of dollars annually and support critical sectors across the country.

“Representation is a cornerstone of democracy. Nigeria’s diaspora has long played an instrumental role in national development—politically, socially, and economically. It’s time their voice was formally heard at the legislative table,” said Dr. Adaeze Obiora, spokesperson for the coalition and director of the Pan-African Civic Forum.

The call for reserved parliamentary seats follows a series of consultations held earlier this year between diaspora leaders, electoral reform advocates, and lawmakers in Abuja. The coalition is proposing an amendment to Nigeria’s electoral law that would allow for proportional representation or designated seats for the diaspora, drawing inspiration from models implemented in countries such as France, Tunisia, and Ghana.

The movement has gained traction among younger Nigerians and reform-minded legislators who see global integration and inclusive democracy as essential to Nigeria’s future.

The coalition plans to host a stakeholder summit in Lagos next month to build momentum for the proposal and engage policymakers, legal experts, and civil society leaders.
