The Emirate Council of Gusau announces with deep sorrow the passing of His Royal Highness, Dr. Ibrahim Bello, the Emir of Gusau, who died on Friday, July 25, 2025, at the age of 71, after a prolonged illness.
The late Emir, who ascended the throne in 2015, passed away in a private hospital in Abuja, surrounded by family and close aides. His death marks the end of a significant era of peace-driven leadership and progressive traditional governance in the heart of Zamfara State.
Born on June 12, 1954, in Wonaka district of Gusau Local Government Area, Dr. Ibrahim Bello was a seasoned administrator and public health expert before his coronation. He held various positions in the state civil service, including Director of Primary Health Care, Permanent Secretary, and Commissioner. He was also a former Executive Secretary of the Sultan Abdurrahman School of Health Technology in Gwadabawa, Sokoto State.
A holder of a Master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Manchester, UK, the late Emir was widely respected for his intellect, humility, and commitment to community development. During his reign, he championed peacebuilding efforts and played a prominent role in health initiatives, particularly immunization and maternal care programs across the state.
Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State expressed his grief over the passing of the monarch, describing him as “a father figure and a trusted adviser whose legacy of service and leadership will remain indelible.”
“His Royal Highness was not only a symbol of our heritage but also a beacon of wisdom and unity. He will be greatly missed by all who had the honor of working with or being led by him,” the Governor said.
The late Emir is survived by his wives, children, and grandchildren. Funeral prayers will be held today in Gusau in accordance with Islamic rites, and dignitaries from across Nigeria are expected to pay their respects.
