Billionaire entrepreneur and tech magnate Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new political movement, the America Party, aimed at disrupting the long-standing dominance of the Republican and Democratic parties in the United States.
The announcement, made via Musk’s social media platform X on July 5, follows a dramatic public fallout with President Donald Trump and a growing wave of dissatisfaction with the current political establishment. Musk cited “unchecked government waste, corruption, and a lack of true democratic representation” as key motivations behind the move.
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party—and you shall have it,” Musk declared in a post referencing a poll he conducted among his followers. “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
While Musk is constitutionally ineligible to run for president due to his South African birth, he has not yet named a leader or candidate for the new party. The America Party’s platform remains under development, but Musk has hinted at targeting a handful of key congressional races to wield influence over future legislation.
The announcement comes amid heightened political tensions following the passage of President Trump’s controversial “Big Beautiful Bill,” which Musk has criticized for ballooning the national deficit and cutting green energy incentive. The rift between the two former allies has escalated into a public feud, with Musk resigning from his role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency earlier this year.
