A massive search and rescue operation is underway in Kerr County, Texas, after catastrophic flash floods swept through the region on Friday, leaving at least 37 people dead, including 14 children, and more than 20 girls still missing from a local summer camp.

The disaster unfolded in the early hours of July 4th, when torrential rains caused the Guadalupe River to rise 26 feet in just 45 minutes, inundating Camp Mystic, a Christian girls’ summer camp hosting approximately 750 children. The camp was left without power, water, or communication, complicating rescue efforts.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has issued a disaster declaration for 15 counties and pledged relentless support: “We will not stop until every one of them is found,” he said during a press briefing. President Donald Trump has also promised federal assistance.

More than 500 emergency personnel, including 14 helicopters, drones, and boats, have been deployed to scour the flood-ravaged landscape. So far, over 850 people have been rescued, many airlifted from rooftops and trees.

Among the missing are 27 girls from Camp Mystic, whose families have been anxiously awaiting updates. Officials stress that some may be stranded in remote areas or out of communication. “That does not mean they’ve been lost,” said Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick. “They could be in a tree, they could be out of communication.”

The tragedy has also claimed the life of Jane Ragsdale, director and co-owner of nearby Heart O’ The Hills camp, which was between sessions at the time of the flood.

Local leaders are urging the public to avoid the area as search efforts continue. “Today will be a hard day,” said Kerrville Mayor Joe Herring Jr. “But we remain hopeful.”
