The All Progressives Congress (APC) has further strengthened its dominance in the National Assembly following the defection of seven lawmakers from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The fresh wave of defections marks a significant boost for the ruling party, tightening its legislative grip and reshaping the balance of power within both chambers.

The announcement was made during Wednesday’s plenary sessions, where the affected lawmakers formally declared their switch to the APC. Citing reasons ranging from internal crises in the PDP to alignment with the progressive vision of the APC-led administration, the defectors were welcomed with resounding applause by APC lawmakers and party leaders.

Among the defectors are key voices from both the Senate and House of Representatives, representing constituencies across the North-Central, South-East, and South-South regions. Their defection brings the total number of PDP lawmakers who have crossed over to the APC in recent months to over a dozen, signaling a growing shift in political allegiance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Reacting to the development, APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, described the defections as “a vote of confidence in the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu” and emphasized the party’s commitment to inclusive governance and legislative collaboration.

“With each new member, the APC family grows stronger and more united. We welcome our brothers and sisters who have chosen the path of progress, development, and responsible leadership,” Ganduje said.

However, the PDP has condemned the defections, accusing the APC of exploiting the nation’s political uncertainties to lure opposition lawmakers. The party leadership has vowed to challenge the legality of the defections where applicable, citing constitutional grounds.

Political observers note that the growing number of defections may impact key legislative decisions, influence committee leadership, and potentially alter the trajectory of national policymaking in the months ahead.

As the 10th National Assembly continues its legislative business, the APC’s expanding control places it in a strategic position to push its agenda more decisively, while raising questions about the future cohesion and strategy of the opposition.
