Workers of Craneburg Construction Company staged a protest today following the tragic death of a colleague after a fence collapse at the Kwara Hotel construction site. This marks the third fatality in just one week, raising serious concerns about safety measures at the site.
The incident occurred when a section of the fence, which was under reconstruction, suddenly gave way, burying several workers under the rubble. While emergency responders rushed the victims to Sadiku Hospital, two workers were pronounced dead on arrival. Witnesses report that workers had previously raised concerns about the structural integrity of the fence, but their warnings were allegedly ignored by the foreign contractors overseeing the project.
In response to the tragedy, Craneburg workers gathered outside the construction site, demanding accountability and improved safety protocols. Protesters carried placards and chanted slogans, calling for an independent investigation into the repeated incidents. “This could have been avoided if proper safety measures had been in place,” one worker stated.
The Kwara State Government has acknowledged the incident, with Chief Press Secretary Rafiu Ajakaye confirming that the affected fence was an old structure separating the hotel from a nearby facility. He expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and assured that authorities are reviewing the situation.
As tensions rise, workers and labor unions are urging Craneburg Construction Company and state officials to take immediate action to prevent further loss of life. The protest continues as employees demand justice for their fallen colleagues and a commitment to safer working conditions.
