Legal representatives of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan have raised serious concerns over what they describe as a clear case of bias and selective justice by the Nigeria Police Force. The lawyers allege that despite multiple petitions submitted by the Senator over the past year, authorities have failed to take action, while a recent petition by Senate President Godswill Akpabio received swift response and intervention.

In a strongly worded statement issued to the press, the Senator’s legal team condemned what they called “a troubling pattern of institutional double standards” that undermines the rule of law and public confidence in Nigeria’s justice system

“Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has submitted no fewer than four petitions to the Nigeria Police over threats to her life, electoral violence, and defamatory campaigns aimed at discrediting her. To date, none of these has been acted upon with the urgency or seriousness they deserve,” said Barrister Chinedu Ogbuefi, lead counsel for the Senator.

“In stark contrast, we observe with concern that a petition filed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio was not only acknowledged but resulted in immediate police action, including summonses and the initiation of investigations within days,” he added.

The legal team argues that the selective treatment violates the principles of equal protection under the law, and called on the Inspector General of Police to explain the disparity in handling the two high-profile cases.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, has long been an outspoken advocate for transparency, electoral reforms, and women’s rights. Her lawyers claim that her independent stance has made her a target for political intimidation.

“This is not just about Senator Natasha,” said Ogbuefi. “This is about every Nigerian who believes in justice. If institutions can be used to silence critics or shield certain individuals, then democracy is at risk.”

The legal team confirmed it is preparing to seek redress through legal channels, including the possibility of filing a formal complaint with the National Human Rights Commission and relevant international bodies.
