In a momentous and unprecedented decision, the College of Cardinals has elected an American as the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. The newly elected pontiff, His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, succeeds Pope Francis and now takes his place as the leader of more than 1.3 billion Catholics worldwide.

The election took place in the conclave at the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel, where cardinals from across the globe cast their votes, ultimately selecting Pope Leo XIV to guide the Church through its next chapter. His appointment marks a historic milestone, as he becomes the first American to ascend to the papacy, reflecting the global and diverse nature of the Church in the 21st century.

In his first address from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV expressed deep gratitude and humility for the trust placed in him. “With faith in God and love for all His people, I accept this calling,” he declared, as thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square erupted in joyous applause. The new Pope emphasized his commitment to unity, compassion, and the continuation of the Church’s mission to promote peace, justice, and the dignity of all.
