The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially invited former Niger Delta militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, for questioning following widespread public outrage over a viral video allegedly showing gross abuse of the Nigerian Naira.
The video, which has circulated widely across social media platforms since the weekend, appears to show bundles of Naira notes being sprayed and thrown in a lavish celebration reportedly linked to associates of the ex-militant. The display, seen by many as a violation of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s guidelines on currency handling, has sparked condemnation from civil society groups and the general public, who have called for swift action.
"The EFCC has extended an invitation to Mr. Government Ekpemupolo in connection with the viral video that depicts a potential abuse of the Nigerian currency. The Commission remains committed to upholding the integrity of the nation’s financial system and will thoroughly investigate all parties involved."
Although Tompolo has not been formally charged with any offense, the EFCC emphasized the importance of his cooperation in assisting with the ongoing investigation. Sources within the commission suggest that the inquiry may also be expanded to include financial transactions and funding sources related to the event in question.
