Prominent human rights activist and co-convener of the #BringBackOurGirls movement, Aisha Yesufu, has publicly scolded Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi for his recent comments criticizing Nigerians who protested during former President Goodluck Jonathan's administration.
In a sharp and direct response, Yesufu reminded Obi that protest is a constitutionally protected right and a critical tool for citizens to hold leaders accountable. She emphasized that no administration should be exempt from public scrutiny, especially in a democratic society.
“Yes, we protested under Jonathan, and rightly so,” Yesufu stated. “We protested under Buhari, and we will protest under any leader who fails to prioritize the wellbeing of Nigerians. It is not about the personality; it is about principles and governance.”
Peter Obi had reportedly expressed disapproval toward protests that took place during Jonathan’s tenure, suggesting they were politically motivated. His remarks have since drawn criticism from various civil society figures who argue that such statements undermine democratic engagement.
Yesufu, known for her fearless advocacy across administrations, urged Obi and other political leaders to support citizens’ rights to peaceful protest rather than attempt to delegitimize their actions.
“Our loyalty is to Nigeria, not to any politician,” she said. “If we lose the right to protest, we lose the soul of our democracy.”
