The pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has called for the immediate suspension of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, following serious corruption allegations leveled against one of his top aides.
In a statement issued today by the National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Comrade Jare Ajayi, the group expressed deep concern over reports linking the aide to multi-million-naira procurement fraud and abuse of office. The organization emphasized that while investigations are ongoing, the SGF’s continued presence in office poses a risk to the integrity of the probe and undermines public confidence in the government’s commitment to accountability.
“Afenifere is committed to the rule of law and due process, but it is imperative that public office holders be held to the highest standards of conduct,” the statement read. “Given the gravity of the allegations and the proximity of the accused to the SGF, we urge President Bola Tinubu to suspend Mr. Akume pending the outcome of an independent and transparent investigation.”
The group noted that the fight against corruption must be impartial and devoid of favoritism if Nigeria is to make meaningful progress. Afenifere also called on anti-graft agencies, particularly the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), to carry out their duties without fear or political interference.
